TOWN OF VIENNA: Plastic Bags No Longer Used for Yard Waste

Garbagebag

Town of Vienna issued the following announcement on Jun. 11.

Fairfax County has eliminated plastic bags from yard waste collection. This ban went into effect on March 1, 2021, and the county began enforcing the new rule on April 19, 2021. Penalties will be assessed to any collector who delivers yard waste in plastic bags to Fairfax County solid waste management facilities. What does this mean for Town residents? It means that, as of April 19, 2021, the Town will no longer collect yard waste in plastic bags. Residents must place grass clippings, leaves, weeds, vines, and other materials loose in reusable containers or paper bags made specifically for yard waste and available at hardware stores. This new policy is better for the environment. It also prevents expensive waste processing machinery from becoming clogged or damaged by plastic bags.

Visit Fairfax County's website for more information about this change.
