Town of Vienna Police issued the following announcement on July 9

Improved safety features, wayfinding signs and an expanded trail and sidewalk network are among the reasons the Town of Vienna was recently recognized as a bronze-level Bicycle-Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. The award is presented to communities that demonstrate a strong commitment to bicycling by creating transportation and recreational resources that benefit residents and improve the quality of life.

“Over the past year alone and throughout the pandemic, more and more residents discovered the benefits of bicycling and how bike-friendly the Town of Vienna really is,” said Town Manager Mercury Payton. “This award is quite an honor and a testament to our collective commitment to creating a safe environment for both bike riders and pedestrians.”

The Town’s Department of Public Works and Parks and Recreation Department continues to install and upgrade sidewalks and trails and install additional bicycle racks through town. Funding has also been provided for bicycle safety and education programs administered through the Town of Vienna Police Department, the Parks and Recreation Department and schools.

Other details that led to the Bicycle-Friendly Community award include expanded bicycle parking in the Town’s retail district, traffic-calming safety projects and a requirement for all new developments to include bicycle parking in their plans. Future goals include expanding bicycle parking, identifying safe bicycle commuter routes to neighboring communities such as Tysons and Merrifield and Oakton, and expanding Capital Bikeshare to Vienna.
