Fairfax County issued the following announcement on Aug. 27
We are currently supporting a U.S. Department of State operation for people evacuated from Afghanistan and arriving at Dulles International Airport. After landing, some refugees are transported to the federal processing site at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly and then transported to various military bases around the country.
Once refugees are processed at the bases, resettlement agencies will assist individuals and families in relocating to a permanent new home, especially where they have family and friends. Because Fairfax County has a sizable Afghan population, it is anticipated that many refugees will eventually resettle here.
We’re working with nonprofits and faith communities in assisting Afghan refugees who will eventually call the county their home. Afghan refugees have experienced significant trauma, uncertainty and stress during the evacuation process. It is our priority to ensure that individuals and families who resettle here can access services as quickly as possible so that they can focus on rebuilding their lives and establishing support networks in the community.
Donations are NOT being accepted at the Dulles Expo Center at this time. However, many local organizations are eager provide support, and Fairfax County does partner closely with local refugee resettlement agencies to share information, establish points of contact for benefit coordination, and provide training on available programs and services. The local resettlement agencies for the Northern Virginia area are:
- Catholic Charities Diocese of Arlington
- Lutheran Social Services National Capital Area
- Ethiopian Community Development Council
