Recruit School 150 Receives Conflict Management Training

10

Graduation is just days away for Recruit School 150. Before graduating from the academy, the Professional Development Section delivered the “Introduction to Conflict Management” course to the class. The course is intended to provide the soon-to-be probationary firefighter with the skills necessary to familiarize them with the department’s expectations regarding conflict management, violations of policy, review of procedures, and an overview of our 6-Step Process for conflict management.

Additionally, the course provides a foundational awareness of conflict management, along with incorporating several skill stations that cover active listening and effective summarizing through open and, at times, difficult conversations. Students are also provided practical group scenarios in which they must recognize, identify actions, and indicate the appropriate level of response needed to handle the conflict. This systems-based approach further emphasizes our department’s commitment to successful conflict management and the necessary training needed throughout our careers.

The ability to engage in constructive conversations, especially in today’s fast-paced world, is a critical component in developing a well-rounded firefighter and paramedic. Equipping our newest employees with the knowledge to identify, manage, and resolve conflict with that “you win – I win” mindset sets the stage for a successful employee that encourages teamwork and shared leadership.

Firefighter Caroline Evey, who minored in Dispute Management and Resolution in college and is a County ADR Certified Mediator, was the course instructor.
