Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Michelle Reid shared on May 26 a comprehensive overview of recent accomplishments, initiatives, and community events within the school division. Reid highlighted the end of another spring season, emphasizing ongoing opportunities as the academic year draws to a close.

Reid introduced the “Shining a Light on Success” video series, which features school leaders sharing effective practices. The first installment includes Justice High School Principal Sean Rolon discussing how the CORE framework—community, opportunity, rigor, and empowerment—has contributed to improvements in student experience and school performance. West Potomac High School’s efforts to reduce chronic absenteeism were also featured through strategies such as personalized outreach and attendance programs.

The superintendent celebrated student achievements at national competitions. Nine students from Fairfax County won awards at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, with Langley High School students Bennett Huang and Jason Pan receiving one of ISEF’s top honors. Polina Anfilofyev from Marshall High School was recognized by The Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications for her research project.

Reid reported attending several community events including the Fairfax County Council of PTAs awards ceremony, where scholarships were distributed; a McLean Citizens Association meeting focused on capital improvement projects; classroom visits at Thoreau Middle School; tours of renovated facilities such as Herndon Elementary; meetings with faith leaders about artificial intelligence and religious holidays; as well as boundary discussions affecting local schools.

She noted significant progress in academic areas: Haycock Elementary’s Algebra I pilot saw all 58 sixth-grade students pass their state exam, with most earning advanced scores. Literacy initiatives have resulted in more secondary students reading at or near grade level compared to last year. Recent budget approval by the School Board aims to balance fiscal responsibility while supporting educational excellence across FCPS.

In closing remarks, Reid recognized staff achievements—including Capital Emmy Award nominations for communications work—and encouraged grace during graduation season. She concluded by reflecting on Memorial Day’s significance: “True heroism is remarkably sober… It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.”
