Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Superintendent Michelle Reid recently shared her reflections on the week’s events, highlighting several achievements and initiatives within the district.
Reid expressed her admiration for the graduation ceremonies she attended this spring, noting, “The graduates have been inspiring, the speeches thoughtfully written and passionately delivered.” She thanked all staff members involved in graduating the FCPS Class of 2025.
Reid also celebrated two young inventors from Willow Springs Elementary, Luciana and Scarlett, who were named national winners in the 2025 ExploraVision competition. Their project, Electro-Buzz, uses AI-powered drones to mimic bee behavior for crop pollination.
During a recent School Board meeting, Reid discussed advanced coursework benefits like Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Dual Enrollment (DE) courses. These courses help students build college-level skills and may save tuition costs. The number of AP and IB exams taken by FCPS students has increased since 2022.
Reid highlighted Goal 2 of the Strategic Plan: Safe, Supported, Included, and Empowered. This goal emphasizes fostering a positive school climate where students feel accepted and supported.
The superintendent also attended several events recognizing outstanding employees and retirees’ contributions to public education. At these events, she acknowledged their dedication to public education’s promise.
In closing her weekly reflection, Reid encouraged everyone to enjoy a restful summer while reconnecting with family and friends.
