National Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, running from May 5 to May 9, honors the contributions of educators and staff who support, challenge, and inspire students. Among those recognized last year were two teachers from Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), Shea Hestmark and Symone Keolani Jenkins.
Shea Hestmark was named the 2024 Outstanding Elementary School Teacher. As a second-grade teacher at Columbia Elementary School, she is known for her dedication and passion in creating an inclusive learning environment. Beyond her classroom duties, Hestmark leads her second-grade team, serves as Columbia’s Equity Lead, and co-chairs the school’s Technology Committee. Her colleagues often commend her leadership skills with Cougar Cards, recognizing teamwork and positivity.
Symone Keolani Jenkins received recognition as the 2024 Outstanding Secondary School New Teacher. An English teacher at West Potomac High School since April 2022, Jenkins has been noted for her vibrant energy and inclusive teaching philosophy. She has made significant contributions as a ninth-grade team leader and in aligning curriculum across grade levels. Her mentorship of new teachers has also been highlighted by colleagues.
Both educators exemplify excellence in education through their commitment to students and colleagues.
