Detectives from the Major Crimes Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred near Greenbriar, resulting in injuries to two officers. The incident took place when an officer conducting traffic enforcement on Majestic Lane stopped a 1999 Toyota Corolla driven by Jamal Wali, 36, from Fairfax. Wali, who was uncooperative, reached for a firearm and shot two officers. In response, a third officer fired at Wali, hitting him four times.

Emergency measures were administered to the injured officers and Wali at the scene. The officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were hospitalized, while Wali was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“The officer involved in the shooting has been identified as a 2-year veteran assigned to the Fair Oaks Patrol District.” In line with department procedures, the officer is currently on restricted duty pending investigation results.

The criminal investigation into the use of force is being handled by the Major Crimes Bureau. “The body-worn camera footage will be released within 30 days in accordance with the Department’s policy.” Additionally, the investigation results will be presented to the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney.

Internally, the Internal Affairs Bureau conducts an administrative review, supported by the Independent Police Auditor. “The name of the officer will be released within 10 days and in accordance with the Department’s policy.”

All details from the press release are preliminary and may change as the investigation continues.
