It has been 25 years since the Running is Elementary (RIE) program began fostering connections between elementary school students and West Potomac High School. Each spring, the high school’s track and field team coaches young athletes from feeder schools within the pyramid.
The program includes events such as the 100m to 1800m races, hurdles, and long jump. This year, participants include students from Waynewood, Belle View, Bucknell, Hollin Meadows, Hybla Valley, and Stratford Landing elementary schools.
Mason Wilhite, a senior at West Potomac who competes in multiple track events, finds coaching rewarding. “I like coaching a lot; it’s been a great experience for me,” he said. Wilhite has volunteered with RIE for four years and is currently paired with Hybla Valley students.
Hybla Valley’s Principal Kathleen Sain expressed excitement about their participation in this year’s track meet. She emphasized the benefits of the program and praised staff efforts in supporting student involvement. “We are really excited to be a part of this,” she stated.
The RIE initiative was created by Don Beeby in 2000. The retired teacher and athletics coach aimed to promote active lifestyles among children through community engagement. “It goes to show that parents want their kids to be active and outdoors,” Beeby remarked.
Fourth grader Azaria Samson from Hybla Valley plans to compete in the 100m dash and views himself as a fast runner eager to improve his speed.
Running is Elementary aligns with Goal 2 of the FCPS Strategic Plan by encouraging student participation in extracurricular activities.
